EIP-8141: how Ethereum Frames separate transaction signatures from gas payment

Draft EIP-8141 replaces the fixed Ethereum transaction shape with a sequence of frames that can separate authentication, gas payment and execution. The design could enable ERC-20 fee payment, sponsored transactions, batching and flexible key rotation, but it is not scheduled for a network upgrade.

EIP-8141: how Ethereum Frames separate transaction signatures from gas payment

EIP-8141 proposes changing the basic shape of an Ethereum transaction. Instead of one fixed structure, a transaction could contain a sequence of up to 64 frames, each representing an ordinary contract call. One frame can validate the user, another can authorize who pays gas, and later frames can execute the intended action.

The practical consequence is that transaction authorization and fee funding no longer have to come from the same account. A wallet holding only a stablecoin or another ERC-20 could potentially pay fees through a dedicated frame, while an application could sponsor a user's gas. Similar UX exists through ERC-4337, but Frames would move the model into the protocol transaction format and public mempool.

The proposal also supports batching actions under shared success or failure conditions and defines default code for externally owned accounts. Its authors connect flexible authentication with future migration away from ECDSA toward post-quantum signatures, allowing account logic to evolve without forcing every user into a separate smart-account migration.

EIP-8141 remains a draft and is not scheduled for a specific Ethereum upgrade. Frames should therefore be treated as active protocol research rather than an already adopted mainnet fee model.
